Me? Camping? Skegness 2026

Yes I've done it. Camping! Can you believe it? For a bit of background, I have very little experience in camping as a kid as my mum has always been very sensitive to cold, and my dad vowed never to sleep under the canvas again after his national service, unless WW3 was to erupt in his lifetime. 😏

I (unintentionally) got out of a family camping trip in Whitby 2 years ago due to a fracture, but last bank holiday week end, beautiful weather was forecast, so we HAD to go to the sea side and why not make it two days?

You may know that Skegness is one of our favourites as it is the nearest resort, and I do not agree with popular opinion, that it is mediocre or overly tacky. The idea came to me at the 11th hour so I knew that it would be hard to find a place to stay overnight but as it was hot, I thought camping would be nice and I had to try it.

At last the sea!

Skegness Pier

I love that idea, even though I no longer have a dog

Oh I love those rock pools when the tide is low. In Skegness you can swim whether the tide is high or low.

So how did camping go? I have to be honest, I did not sleep much. The main reason is I naively thought it was as hot at night as it was during the day so I did not pack the right pyjamas for me or my daughters. We managed to be cold. However, we were lucky to find a good site with clean facilities and not that much queuing even though the site was full. Another big positive is camping forces us to spend time working together, to pitch up the tent and cook, and spend some quality time as a family, without any electricity. We had to stick to the rule of only using our smartphones to take photos and send the odd message to relatives.

The weather was an absolute delight so I am glad we went there to enjoy the seaside. I am almost gutted we only stayed one night as we had to get back to work on Tuesday. I also know that the first night is always the toughest, so it would have been nice to stay an extra night just to see if it was easier. Would I go camping again? Definitely. Only, I would invest in thermals and possibly a night hat beforehand, especially as the weather may not be as nice as it was last weekend.
