Camping in Whitby? Why not?









As long as you don't have a fracture! As I could not go with the rest of the family during that adventure, I have gathered their thoughts:

1. Did you enjoy it? A unanimous big yes!
2. What places did you visit other than Whitby? A: the obligatory Robin Hood's Bay (as my husband and tow daughters were all born in Nottingham), Staithes and Runswick Bay.
3. Did you find any fossils in Robin Hood's Bay? A: not as many as last time (when my first born started a collection six years ago)
4. What was the weather like in the North of England? A: We were rather lucky, the first and third nights were really cold and it was windy at times, hence the purchase of a new wind breaker. Hardly any rain otherwise.
5. did you visit the iconic ruined abbey? A: No unfortunately as they now charge £17 for each adult. We just looked from outside.
6. How did crabbing go? A: The water is really tidal like in North Devon, but crabbing remains possible in low tide in Whitby harbour. We fished 20 crabs each. We tried in Staithes but the tide was low so not really a success.


Enfin, à condition de ne pas avoir le bras en compote! N'ayant malheureusement pas pu accompagner ma petite famille dans cette aventure, voici leurs pensées :

  1. Avez-vous aimé? réponse unanime : un grand oui!
  2. Quels lieux avez-vous visité en dehors de Whitby? R: L'incontournable Robin Hood's Bay (pour mon mari et mes filles tous nés à Nottingham!), Staithes et Runswick Bay.
  3. A Robin Hood Bay, avez-vous trouvé des fossiles ? R: Pas autant que la dernière fois (il y a six ans, quand ma fille aînée a commencé une collection)
  4. Vous avez eu beau temps, sachant qu'il s'agit vraiment du grand Nord de l'Angleterre ? R: Nous avons été assez gâtés. La première et la troisième nuit étaient particulièrement froides, et il y a eu beaucoup de vent par moment, d'où l'investissement dans un pare vent. Presque pas de pluie sinon.
  5. Êtes-vous rentrés dans l'emblématique abbaye en ruine? R: Non hélas! Cela coûte déjà 17£ pour un adulte, donc nous nous sommes contentés de regarder de l'extérieur.
  6. La pêche aux crabes était-elle aussi bonne qu'à Appledore? R: comme dans le Nord du Devon, l'amplitude de la marée est élevée, mais au port de Whitby, il reste possible de pêcher le crabe même à marée basse. Nous avons réussi à pêcher vingt crabes chacune! Nous avons aussi tenté à Staithes mais comme la marée était basse, c'était moins réussi.

 Bonjour à tous ! L’été touchant à sa fin, il est temps de partager ce que notre famille a traversé cet été. Pour moi, malheureusement ça a mal commencé dû à une chute de vélo et une fracture au bras qui m’a valu son immobilisation pendant plusieurs semaines, a compromis nos projets d’aventures, et la rééducation ne fait que commencer. Cela dit, pas question de renoncer à nos vacances à Westward Ho! , dans le Nord du magnifique comté du Devon. J’adore cet endroit mais cela m’étonne que toutes mes connaissances anglaises ne le connaissent pas. ("Isn't it that place with an exclamation mark in its name?") Nous avons été gâtés par le climat, mais bien entendu, la température de l’eau dépasse rarement les 17 °C. Certains portent des combinaisons pour se baigner, elles sont d’ailleurs disponibles à la location pour 10 £ pour deux heures je crois. One lovely hike : Ladybower reservoir / Derwent Dam

As mentioned in the previous post, I broke my arm about 5 weeks ago, and the rehabilitation process is only just starting. I really miss my bike that I obviously  cannot use anymore, but still go for easy enough hikes with my young family. Shortly after we came back home from Devon, my husband saw that the circuit around Ladybower Reservoir, about 40 miles away, was nominated amongst the best hikes in England. We decided to go for it, as the weather was lovely and the difficulty sounded OK for me. Needless to say the view was breath-taking, it reminded me of a school trip to the Black Forest in Germany over 20 years ago. We saw a few families on bikes that could be hired from a nearby shop, but still quite a few people were also on foot.
