Not so famous but a lovely part of England: Shropshire

As the summer break has finally begun, before dropping off my little horse rider to a week-long camp, we thought a little hike in the area might be great to spend some time together.

I already saw the lovely town of Shrewsbury last year but before we stopped there again we thought we could climb Pontesford Hill and Earl’s Hill and were not disappointed 










How steep!

There were different ways to reach the summit and climb down but we went for the steepest which seemed quicker, even though I thought some bit were overgrown and thorny so I would recommend wearing trousers if it’s not too hot. 

I understood the Earl’s Hill was an extinct volcano 🌋. It was really windy up there but the view was amazing. I do not think I would have had the idea of going there if it wasn’t for my daughter’s horse riding camp nearby but my husband and I really do not regret it. It is not pushchair friendly but is is not that high so little legs might make it to the top. From there, you might catch a glimpse of Wales and the Shropshire National Park 🏞️ 

The lovely little county town of Shrewsbury 

There was definitely no cafe nearby so we drove a bit further to Shrewsbury for refreshments. It was quite busy, with a lot of bunting, possibly because football was on. It’s a little town definitely worth stopping at if you’re not far away. It is crossed by River Severn and has a few spires for those who enjoy visiting such places. It also has a lot of traditional houses and pubs, with Tudor architecture, though some chains like Pizza Express and Caffè Nero have made their way there.

One lovely hike : Ladybower reservoir / Derwent Dam

As mentioned in the previous post, I broke my arm about 5 weeks ago, and the rehabilitation process is only just starting. I really miss my bike that I obviously  cannot use anymore, but still go for easy enough hikes with my young family. Shortly after we came back home from Devon, my husband saw that the circuit around Ladybower Reservoir, about 40 miles away, was nominated amongst the best hikes in England. We decided to go for it, as the weather was lovely and the difficulty sounded OK for me. Needless to say the view was breath-taking, it reminded me of a school trip to the Black Forest in Germany over 20 years ago. We saw a few families on bikes that could be hired from a nearby shop, but still quite a few people were also on foot. Cantine vs panier repas: ma décision est prise

 Bonjour à tous,  Cette fois-ci, je change de sujet pour parler d’alimentation, et non d’aventure en extérieur, plus précisément du déjeuner à l’école. Si vous vivez en Angleterre, vous n’êtes sûrement pas sans savoir qu’une chose qui n’est pas envisageable pour un enfant scolarisé est de rentrer à la maison le midi, comme le font certains élèves en France et surtout en Suisse. Ici, très peu d'écoles acceptent de laisser partir les enfants le midi pour une raison que j'ignore sachant que certains enfants ont un parent disponible la journée, et habitent près de leur école, à savoir à un quart d'heure de marche maximum. J'ignore pourquoi la cantine est grosso modo imposée à ces élèves. Beaucoup d’entre nous avons de plus ou moins bons souvenirs de la cantine, mais une chose qui ne se faisait pas du tout en France à mon époque était d’emporter un panier repas (ou une gamelle).  En France comme en Angleterre, la nourriture de la cantine ne plait pas à tous et hélas, trop de...

Camping in Whitby? Why not?

As long as you don't have a fracture! As I could not go with the rest of the family during that adventure, I have gathered their thoughts: 1. Did you enjoy it? A unanimous big yes! 2. What places did you visit other than Whitby? A: the obligatory Robin Hood's Bay (as my husband and tow daughters were all born in Nottingham), Staithes and Runswick Bay. 3. Did you find any fossils in Robin Hood's Bay? A: not as many as last time (when my first born started a collection six years ago) 4. What was the weather like in the North of England? A: We were rather lucky, the first and third nights were really cold and it was windy at times, hence the purchase of a new wind breaker. Hardly any rain otherwise. 5. did you visit the iconic ruined abbey? A: No unfortunately as they now charge £17 for each adult. We just looked from outside. 6. How did crabbing go? A: The water is really tidal like in North Devon, but crabbing remains possible in low tide in Whitby harbour. We fished 20 crab...
