Cornwall part 2: Walking along cliffs

Did we really managed two hikes in one day? We started off with Trevose Head. The weather was not rainy but cloudy that’s why we thought it might be a perfect day for walking along cliffs. It was ever so impressive, though a tad bit vertigo-inducing, especially as we visited at low tide. After just under an hour admiring the alcoves (and failing to see any seals), we paid a visit to Padstow. 

 







I do like that architecture. A change from the red bricks where I live.

Padstow was fine but as far as I am concerned, overcrowded. We hoped to do some crabbing but saw no one very successful at it, so after catching a bargain buying new wetsuits, and a changing robe for me, as I hope to do more wild swimming, we headed off to the Bedruthan steps.


The girls already took persuasion to go for another hike so we had to cut that second one short, but we were still very much impressed by the view, as well as proud to have walked so far in just one day. After that, the tide was high enough for the girls to try on their new wetsuits for some body boarding!

One lovely hike : Ladybower reservoir / Derwent Dam

As mentioned in the previous post, I broke my arm about 5 weeks ago, and the rehabilitation process is only just starting. I really miss my bike that I obviously  cannot use anymore, but still go for easy enough hikes with my young family. Shortly after we came back home from Devon, my husband saw that the circuit around Ladybower Reservoir, about 40 miles away, was nominated amongst the best hikes in England. We decided to go for it, as the weather was lovely and the difficulty sounded OK for me. Needless to say the view was breath-taking, it reminded me of a school trip to the Black Forest in Germany over 20 years ago. We saw a few families on bikes that could be hired from a nearby shop, but still quite a few people were also on foot. Virée annuelle à Londres

 Si comme moi vous êtes parent français expatrié en Angleterre, vous devez occasionnellement vous rendre à la capitale pour demander ou retirer des papiers administratifs. C’est que j’ai dû faire moi-même hier. Mes deux filles franco-britanniques, nées à Nottingham, ont désormais une carte d’identité française chacune. Pas trop tôt, sachant que l’ainée a douze ans ! Le consulat étant à South Kensington, j’ai pensé me garer à une place louée par un propriétaire parti en vacances, près du Tesco de Earls Court, pour éviter si possible de prendre le métro, très couteux. Heureusement, le climat s’y prêtait. Une fois les papiers retirés, et le déjeuner pris, nous nous sommes dirigés vers Hyde Park pour y passer un bel après-midi. Le fait de venir en voiture nous a permis non seulement d’éviter le métro mais aussi d’emporter les rollers des filles pour se déplacer plus rapidement. Camping in Whitby? Why not?

As long as you don't have a fracture! As I could not go with the rest of the family during that adventure, I have gathered their thoughts: 1. Did you enjoy it? A unanimous big yes! 2. What places did you visit other than Whitby? A: the obligatory Robin Hood's Bay (as my husband and tow daughters were all born in Nottingham), Staithes and Runswick Bay. 3. Did you find any fossils in Robin Hood's Bay? A: not as many as last time (when my first born started a collection six years ago) 4. What was the weather like in the North of England? A: We were rather lucky, the first and third nights were really cold and it was windy at times, hence the purchase of a new wind breaker. Hardly any rain otherwise. 5. did you visit the iconic ruined abbey? A: No unfortunately as they now charge £17 for each adult. We just looked from outside. 6. How did crabbing go? A: The water is really tidal like in North Devon, but crabbing remains possible in low tide in Whitby harbour. We fished 20 crab...
